Fe-Mn concentrations in upland loess soils in mid-continental north America: A step towards dynamic soil survey

چکیده

Iron-manganese (Fe-Mn) concentrations are common morphological indicators of soil oxidation-reduction reactions and widely used to infer hydrology. The factors determining occurrence distribution Fe-Mn at the continental scale have been rarely studied. objective this study was explore in upland loess soils identify their favorable environment conditions mid-continental North America. A total 3966 profiles were collected from National Soil Information System database (NASIS). decision tree (DT) model analyze spatial relationships between concentration formation its relevant environmental (climate, properties, land use/land cover), key soils. DT evaluated with 25% validation dataset an accuracy 79%. Results showed that more likely occur mesic areas large precipitation low internal drainage rates, compared frigid thermic rates. Annual temperature identified as most important climatic influencing a complex interaction properties multiple scales. related potential wet saturated also for concentrations. demonstrated importance using knowledge pedogenesis selection covariates interpretation results. Understanding where tend form landscape will contribute improving decisions about proper use may be limited by wetness possible inferences climate influences.

Continental Divides in North Dakota and North America

To the uninitiated eye, the countryside between Valley City and Jamestown is seemingly among the most unremarkable stretches of Interstate 94 (I-94), not just in North Dakota, but along its entire route from Chicago to Seattle. Granted, the terrain here is pretty flat with gentle undulations amounting to less relief than one finds on the waves of the open ocean. And yes, some travelers battle w...

Modeling of piping erosion in loess soils

Extended abstract Introduction Piping erosion is one of the common water erosions usually occurs in soil with low infiltration and soluble minerals that finally changes landscape. Different factors control its occurrence and development. To predict piping occurrence/hazard through modeling, effective factors should be prioritized and considered as inputs of the model. The present study...

Ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) persists in continental North America.

The ivory-billed woodpecker (Campephilus principalis), long suspected to be extinct, has been rediscovered in the Big Woods region of eastern Arkansas. Visual encounters during 2004 and 2005, and analysis of a video clip from April 2004, confirm the existence of at least one male. Acoustic signatures consistent with Campephilus display drums also have been heard from the region. Extensive effor...

Pan-Continental Droughts in North America over the Last Millennium*

Regional droughts are common in North America, but pan-continental droughts extending across multiple regions, including the 2012 event, are rare relative to single-region events. Here, the tree-ring-derived North American Drought Atlas is used to investigate drought variability in four regions over the last millennium, focusing on pan-continental droughts. During the Medieval Climate Anomaly (...
